Incarnation Temptation

For my I Madonnari project I chose both an old master and a new master whom I enjoy greatly. They both happen to be in the same genre, Salvador Dali, a surrealist and Mark Ryden, a Pop Surrealist. Then I just went about choosing one of my favorite pieces from each artist, The Temptation of Saint Anthony by Dali, I love the long, spindly legs, the vast space, and blended colors, and Incarnation by Ryden, I love the large meaty dress, the pale, innocent girl and the lush background foliage. When thinking about combining these two I thought about replacing the nude figure from Dalis’ with the meat girl from Rydens’ but putting her on the horse, or levitating above it. I saw the background in bright and pastel pinks and purples, with stormy clouds and meat floating around the horses’ legs. The length of the horses’ legs in Dalis’ original represent the space between earth and heaven. The horse itself represents temptation, strength, and voluptuousness. The meat girl in my composition therefore also symbolizes temptation and fits the theme well considering what she’s wearing. The blue under the lower right cloud represents rain/purity, the blood coming from her neck and spurting into the horses’ mouth represents their connection. The themes of this piece are temptation, purity, innocence, and sin. Honestly there wasn’t a whole lot of thought put into my composition but I though about it well enough to make it aesthetically pleasing as well as conveying a message.

These were taken around this time last year. The skies were blue and cloudy with this intense hot pink, I wish you could see it in real life. I realy need to start waking up earlier this year...
